First planted in the mid 1970’s, the Virginian vineyards (situated on the Adelaide Plains) produced Shiraz and Riesling. Over 30 years later, the vineyards now have other varieties including Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc and Petit Verdot, all with their own distinct Adelaide Plains characters.
The soil on the vineyards is well balanced with a healthy nutrient mix including well maintained organic matter levels. The soil is red, sandy clay with a limestone base and the main property is intermixed with a rich Gawler River loam. The healthy soils of the Adelaide Plains have contributed to the development of intense fruit flavours evident in the Light’s View range.
The Adelaide Plains offers a Mediterranean climate with warm summers and mild winters. The cool coastal breezes and abundance of sunshine create ideal weather conditions for this grape growing region. |
